The Aquaro team wrapped up a busy 2016 with successful beta tests of the Aquaro ASM section mounting system at two major pharmaceutical companies. The extensive tests demonstrated the Aquaro ASM’s value in:

  • improving laboratory efficiency,
  • increasing slide quality and consistency, and
  • enhancing laboratory ergonomics.

Improving Laboratory Efficiency
The most notable advantage of the Aquaro ASM for the two pharmaceutical company laboratories was the potential to improve histology laboratory efficiency. Users mentioned the Aquaro ASM would facilitate multitasking. As the Aquaro ASM makes microtomy hands-free, users could perform other tasks while the Aquaro ASM cuts, floats, and mounts sections. Some of the tasks the histotechs said they would perform while the Aquaro ASM was running were:

  • Making labels
  • Checking reagent stock levels
  • Ordering supplies
  • Prepping IHC stains

Additionally, one tester predicted that having one histotech run two Aquaro ASMs would further increase their productivity at the microtome. Overall, that user thought that having a Aquaro ASM in their lab would “make the workplace less hectic.”

Increasing Slide ConsistencyMouse Spleen Cut with Aquaro ASM - Consistent Section Placement
Users were impressed by the consistency of section placement on slides that were prepared by the Aquaro ASM. Histotechs commented that this would appeal to pathologists that prefer consistency for ease of use and reading slides.

One laboratory manager commented on how the Aquaro ASM can help researchers that frequently use their facilities but do not have formal training in histology by making microtomy more user-friendly and consistent.

Enhancing Laboratory Ergonomics
Partnering the Aquaro ASM with motorized microtomes allowed users to make microtomy hands-free, reducing the risk of repetitive motion injuries (RMIs). One user liked that the Aquaro ASM programming allows for facing into blocks, which would decrease the number of rotations performed manually.
